Feeling down is something a lot of us experience. Life can hit hard and a lot of things are out of our control. But here are ways that you can take care of yourself, because personal care should be on top of your list when you’re feeling down.

Work Hard

Burying yourself into your work when you’re upset is a good distraction from whatever’s bothering you. As long as you do so in a balanced manner, being a temporary workaholic is an okay thing to do, just as long as you give yourself plenty of sleep and maintain a healthy eating schedule.

Snack On Sweets

Set aside a cheat day to treat yourself with literal treats. Food gives you serotonin and serotonin makes you happy. It’s alright to emotionally eat occasionally, as long as you don’t build up a dependence to it. Snacking is a go to for break ups, dating fails or just your regular gloomy night.

Work Out

When you’re done binging on food, it’s time to set aside time to work things off. Working out is a great way to improve your mood and to bounce back from whatever’s bothering you. A lot of the time, you might not feel like moving an inch, but there are so many low impact workouts that can fit your current mood and motivation level. While exercising, take the time to meditate.

Binge TV

There’s a reason TV used to be demonized, it’s because it’s an effective distraction from the world and is highly addictive. Spending an appropriate amount on it to distract yourself from the world is not harmful at all and can serve to calm your mind once in a while.

See Friends

Friends are there to be like family, to be there when you’re in need. Call up a friend, go out with them, spend some time out with them and have fun. Actively ask them to help you distract yourself and keep their comforting presence around you.
